Sedaka to headline Rosemary Clooney Concert

Sedaka to headline Rosemary Clooney ConcertMonday, May 15, 2006 10:15 PM EDT Promoters of the Kentucky Utilities Presents the 2006 Annual Rosemary Clooney Concert have released the name of the headliner for this year's event.Neil Sedaka, the legendary singer song writer who topped the charts with hits such as "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen," "Laughter in the Rain," and "Calendar Girl" will be performing Sept. 30 at the same street corner Rosemary Clooney and her sisters performed at more than a half century ago.Getting Sedaka to come to Maysville for the annual concert which not only honors Rosemary Clooney, but helps support local projects including a performing arts school, was not an easy task. According to Abby Lundergan Dobson of Lundy's Special Events, work began three years ago."I've been trying to get him for three years," Dobson said. "We had talked to him before and his wife, who is his agent. This year the theme is "Calendar Girl, Our Own Rosemary Clooney."It took the words of other performers who have graced the stage at the intersection of Third and Market streets in downtown Maysville to get Sedaka to commit to a small concert in Kentucky."One of the challenges of booking performers for the concert is that not every one wants to come to Maysville," Dobson said. "Roberta Flack and Rita Coolidge talked to Sedaka and his agent about the concert."When Sedaka heard that Maysville pulls out all the stops to create an ambience that is not found anywhere else in the country, he decided he wanted to part of the concert."This is the first time in eight years a male will take the stage by himself," Dobson said. "Rosemary performed with Michael Feinstein one year, but this is a first for a male performer."Sedaka adds to the variety of music that Dobson has worked hard to bring to Maysville. With Roberta Flack in 2004, soul music was highlighted. Rita Coolidge brought a classical style that included a mix of folk music and jazz. Sedaka adds pop music to the variety, according to Dobson. While just a teenager, Sedaka began writing songs for performers. He formed a partnership with Howard Greenfield that lasted 35 years. In 1958, at only 18 years old, Sedaka wrote "Stupid Cupid" for Connie Francis and followed up with the title song from the movie "Where the Boys Are." He signed a contract with RCA shortly after the success of Francis' recordings.According to information on the performer's Web site, Sedaka traveled around the world performing for the next few years. He studied the styles of music from other countries and combined them with classical and pop music. He also developed a recording style involving multi-tracking his own voice to achieve a rich sound. The 1970s found Sedaka back at the top of the charts with writing and performing. His song, "Love Will Keep Us Together," recorded by The Captain and Tennille helped launch their career and won a Grammy award for Record of the Year. Dobson said the concert would not be possible without the help of KU, the city of Maysville, The Ledger Independent, WFTM and Lundy's Special Events.Tourism Director Duff Giffen said Sedaka will be a great performer for the concert with his ability to entertain both young and old listeners."He can go across different ages," Giffen said. "They (the promoters) wanted to do a male, I think they have made a really good choice, I can see him being very, very entertaining for both young and old."Tickets for the concert are available through Giffen's office by mailing a check to Rosemary Clooney Concert, Attention Duff Giffen, 216, Bridge Street, Maysville, Ky. 41056.Tables are available at four different levels: Premiere, $2,500 per table or $250 a seat; Gold, $2,000 per table or $200 a seat; Silver, $1,800 per table or $180 per seat; and Bronze at $900 per table, $90 per seat. The Bronze table does not have the full butler-served meal as the other levels, but instead offers the popular Rosie Baskets, Dobson said. --Posted by rosellafan to Rosemary the Girl Singer at 5/16/2006 10:42:54 AM

Rosemary Clooney Flood Wall Mural in Maysville

The following appeared in the Maysville paper today. I'm hopeful add information about where folks can send donations to the homepage.

Clooney mural planned for floodwall

The Maysville Mason County Floodwall Mural Committee is playing for all the marbles this year with a fund-raising campaign to raise enough to finish the project. If the funds are not raised, the project is over and there will be no more murals.

Committee Chair Marla Baxter said the decision was made by the committee to raise $300,000 to paint the remaining 25 to 30 panels in three murals. If the group does not raise the money, efforts will turn to maintenance projects.

"We are going to work for the next year just to raise the money to finish the project," Baxter said. "We plan to be at events in the area to raise money."

In the past, the committee has depended on fund-raising mail campaigns, which will continue. However it was decided that this year the group would take the project to the public with an "It's a Wrap Party" April 25 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at French Quarter Hotel. The event is free and open to the public, which Baxter encourages to attend.

The final phase of the floodwall mural project will be outlined during a presentation, Baxter said.

"We want to do a mural to pay tribute to Rosemary Clooney," Baxter said. "We will showcase her career and origins in Maysville and include the Russell Theater."

Another mural could depict the Ohio River Valley through the centuries, according to Baxter. She said with the large area from behind the Medical Building to the Tobacco Mural, there would be enough room to have a pictorial history of the valley.

Homage would be paid to Simon Kenton in another mural and could include his arrival at Limestone Creek.

The project began in 1998 with the first murals dedicated to the Indians and early settlers of the areas and the once plentiful buffalo. The last mural painted depicts the Germantown Fair, which has been around for more than 150 years.

Robert Dafford has painted many of the murals, but he did not paint the last two. He was in Maysville three years ago to paint the Market Street Mural. After talking with the committee, Dafford said he wants to paint the mural of Rosemary Clooney himself."

He can be here in 2007, which is when we will wrap up the fund drive," Baxter said. "He and his workers live in Lafayette and New Orleans. They were impacted by the hurricane and cannot get up here before then.

"The cost of a mural depends on size, but is calculated at $25 a square foot. Prepping the concrete walls for a mural costs the same.

"The paint he uses costs $100 per gallon," Baxter said. "The committee buys the paint, provides lodging and pays a per diem to painters while they are in town, which could be 60 to 90 days.

"The Rosemary Clooney mural is estimated at $36,000. Baxter said if the committee raises only that much money, it would commission that mural. But no more murals would be painted."

It's our top priority," Baxter said. "I have met with Nick and Nina Clooney to discuss what would be appropriate for the mural. They approved the concept and offered their support."

Baxter hopes the committee will see the support of the community at the wine and cheese reception to discuss the final stage of the project. Anyone wishing to attend can RSVP Baxter at 606-564-9419, ask for Marla or leave a voice mail.

Let's Try a Rosie Blog

Hey There!

As I'm sure you've noticed, the bulletin board for The Rosemary Clooney Palladium is no more. A short while ago, someone decided that it would be fun to hack into the board and hijack it. Sad that some folks have nothing better to do with their computer expertise than to destroy the work of others. I've not yet decided whether to add a new board to the site. Until I do, I thought we'd try a blog as a means for me to post news and information and for you to comment. I'm hopeful that in the next couple of weeks there will be some Rosemary related news to report.

Stay connected!
